Community Archaeology in Carlton (12-07-22)

The Bosworth Links Project is coming to Carlton in September.

The plan is to excavate archaeological test pits in gardens in the village over the weekend of 10-11th September.

An archaeological test pit is 1m square and up to 1m deep. The soil is dug out in 100mm layers and sieved to recover any evidence of human activity. After excavation all the soil is returned to the test pit and any turf re-laid.

The objects recovered can range from relatively recent plastic and metal through pieces of pottery to worked flints from the Stone Age, and provide a fascinating history of each site. When put together, the results can tell us how the village has developed through time.

The Bosworth Links Team is now looking for sites in Carlton and Coton. A meeting to introduce and discuss this project will be held at St Andrew’s Church Community Hub at 7.30pm on Thursday 4th August. Lead archaeologist Mathew Morris, of Leicester University, will give a short introductory talk outlining the project, our aims and what will be involved in both the excavation of test-pits and the various roles volunteers can undertake.

There will be a chance to ask questions.

Please do come along if you would like to host a test pit, would like to volunteer for the weekend or would just like to know more.
